PROJECT BAR-B-Q 2019
BBQ Workgroup Reports Overview

#KidsHearingMatters: Designing a Safer In-Ear Listening Experience (for Kids of All Ages)

Discusses hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices, with a focus on in-ear listening devices and transient-rich digital audio, and presents technical and social recommendations to address this issue

A generalized haptic format standard leveraging existing MIDI infrastructure

Presents a detailed proposal for adopting and adapting the MIDI protocol for haptic devices, and provides illustrative examples

Using Machine Learning to improve the experience in consumer audio devices

Explores the use of Machine Learning to ensure content is redered as intended, and to allow for rendering that is optimized for user preferences and content genre, with proposals for a system architecture and a neural network architecture

Audio Turing Test

Defines a framework to evaluate how closely a render system produces an experience equivalent to a live (aka real) one, and describes a methodology to reduce the dependence on human test subjects

The Future of In-Ear Voice Assistants (Assistance)

Profiles the ideal user experience in the 5-7 year range for hearable-nearable-earable voice assistance, with evaluations of the available technologies that will support this user experience and identification of technologies that need further development

Developing a set of audio requirements for the next evolution of Bluetooth

Explores the requirements currently not satisfied by Bluetooth, as well as some of the acceptable trade-offs which could be made, describes multiple use cases, and proposes a new wireless standard for system level connectivity and interoperability

Headphones Unlimited: Current Problems and Future Opportunities

Provides a review of existing headphone functionality, identifying problem areas with today’s devices, and makes recommendations for future hearables

Is this the real world? Or is this Fantasy?

Identifies multiple use cases in different forms of media consumption that show constructed reality is more impactful than a realistic approach
